The water to the outdoor spigot comes from an existing pipeline from inside the house from the main water line. It mainly uses cold water. A standard outdoor hose faucet freezes in the extreme cold weather as the spigot is outside the heated house. This exposes the water below freezing point.  As the temperature falls below the freezing point of water, the water in the faucet and the exposed pipe freezes into ice and expands causing the bursting of the pipe. The plumbing inside house is insulated or heated for protection. The normal outdoor spigot is therefore susceptible to damage by severe weather.

Therefore, you need a freeze proof outdoor spigot. They are between 4 and 24 inches in length and extend back into the house. There valve seat is inside the house. When you turn off the spigot, the water is stopped all the way inside only and it cannot go out to the colder portion of the faucet. It remains in the pipe that is warm inside the home. Hose Bib Spigot:

The hose bib spigot, is one of the most commonly used outdoor faucet and many people call it as a spigot. This outdoor spigot is almost similar in appearance to a sill faucet with its hose threads on its spout 45 degrees angled downward. In a hose bib, faucet water flow valve is just under its control handle. Due to this design, the valve remains exposed to the outside freezing conditions making it vulnerable to freezing in cold climate. As such, it is not a freeze proof-outdoor spigot.

Boiler Drain Valves:

This spigot was originally designed as a drain valve for the boiler. Its name is still unchanged. Boiler drain valve can be installed at the end of a horizontal or vertical pipe. The spout is fitted at 90 degrees angle to the water pipeline. This valve also has spout with hose threads. Generally, the spigot is connected to a washing machine with a flexible hose.
